Epic survey shows the future of blended learning

A new survey by Epic, the UK's leading e-learning company, shows greater clarity emerging about the future role of blended learning within organisations.

The survey, conducted among 203 training and development professionals in large corporates and across the public sector, asked for views about how e-learning will develop over the next three years.

Its most striking finding is that classroom training is expected to be challenged as the dominant form of learning delivery. E-learning will be most effectively supported in blends, respondents indicated, by tutoring/ coaching/mentoring activities, whether on- or offline, rather than by traditional classroom methods.

Greater access to learning and greater flexibility are the chief benefits organisations will look to e-learning to provide, it was thought, rather than just cost reductions.

Good content, rather than improved technology, will also be an important factor in e-learning success.

Other key findings of the survey were:

  • Change will be the primary driver of e-learning in organisations, at both strategic and tactical levels
  • E-learning will happen despite rather than because of top management
  • Asynchronous media will continue to be preferred to synchronous media (e.g. virtual classroom)

Donald Clark, Epic, said: ' The future may already have arrived; it's just not evenly distributed!

'I'm often surprised by surveys. For example the recent data on 13-24 year olds in the US showing that they spend more time online than watching TV. That amazed me. I also liked the large Australian survey of online learners who were not the expected young, adult, urban males but very young, or older, non-urban females.

'This survey gives us some real insights into where many have got to and others may want to get to. We hope you'll find it useful.'
