The Carbon Footprint Issue
There's a hole in the sky and the weather's gone nuts: people, we have to do something. Training carbon-based life-forms is an energy-intensive business, so Learning & Development professionals have their part to play in reducing the footprint. This month we look at what organisations are doing to make training and communications more sustainable.

Top Ten Tips
Recycling in the workplace
Research shows that, on a personal level, we're all more environmentally aware nowadays. But while we might rinse out our dolphin-friendly tuna tins at home, what are we doing - or not doing - at work?
Epic's Ericka Newton gives you the facts.

First Choice for the environment
'Like all companies, First Choice depends on environmental resources to operate. At First Choice we recognise that there is a limit to the pressures society can put on the environment. The First Choice Group has substantial business units in 17 countries across the world and runs an airline of 32 aircraft. Careful management of environmental resources is therefore central to the smooth running of the business...'

Carbon trade-offs
You'd expect an e-learning supplier to say that doing more of your training online will cut carbon emissions - but even we recognise that when it comes to climate change, nothing is ever quite that simple.
More e-learning means less travel, fewer towels washed in hotels, etc. but it also means more servers using more electricity. Do we really save anything at the end of the day..? And even if we do save energy, is it at the expense of a really meaningful learning experience - does lo-energy have to mean low quality?
John Helmer looks at the trade-offs at the heart of the carbon issue, and describes how the '3D internet' is promising a greener future.

What our clients say about us
The [Best Practice in E-learning workshop] was very informative, with a good balance of explanations and tasks. I really enjoyed working on the exercises and having the discussions around the theory of the design and development aspects... As I have never been in a company that has used e-learning, I only had a vague idea of what it was, but after yesterday's training I now understand fully the concept of e-learning... and how it can benefit an organisation like ours.
