Katherine Laux speaks out on Learner Centred Design

Katherine Laux, Head of Design, gave an overview of how maximise return on investment and learner engagement by Epic's Learner-Centred Design approach. Dr Leo Plugge from SURF (Netherlands) came to the session. Dr Plugge is well-known internationally for his educational research. He cited Epic's approach in his keynote address to the Education plenary. In answering the issue 'How we can increase the effect of educational research', he named Epic's approach first in a list of key thinkers from leading Universities, CETL and the Worldbank. Is e-learning green?

"The subject for this month was going to be an incisive look at the world of social learning, but then an interesting opportunity crossed my desk: to research and recommend a conducive environment for e-learning. Right up our street, I thought, we are always trying to develop the most powerful learning culture for our clients, advocating creative blends of online solutions – and then I realised that this opportunity was about the heating, lighting, ventilation and furniture, not the interesting stuff of business impact and culture. Shame: whilst very important, this is not exactly our mainstay of expertise. Anyway, that thought set me off on a ‘fingertip learning’ experience and I began to realise there is a significant issue with these latest social, informal approaches we are using for e-learning – and it’s one that affects us all… "
