Case study
ICI: Performance Management
The challenge
ICI Paints were leading a cross-business project
to develop an e-learning programme for their employees, focusing
on performance review management. It needed to provide any-time
learning on a fundamental HR process, supporting and complementing
the existing tutored workshops.
The content of the training had to be relevant to
both appraisers and appraisees, reinforcing the belief that performance
management is a process that is an integral part of everyday working
life.

The solution
Epic was engaged to develop e-PM - a learning programme
accessed by ICI employees either from their own desktop PCs, dedicated
training PCs (Learning Resource Centres) or laptop computers.
Training is delivered as an HTML-based (browser) programme. The
programme has a clear, easy-to-navigate format, with a friendly
but authoritative tone.
It is engaging and interactive with the use of learning metaphors
and on-screen exercises that replicate the tutor-led workshop to
reinforce learning. There is a quiz element for self-assessment,
but this is not formally tracked with a learning management system.
Simple web log analysis is used, however, to record usage.

Outcomes
Andrea Miles, Business Development Director at Epic, said:
'Performance Management is key to all businesses meeting their strategic
aims and yet, is still often perceived as an HR process rather than
a business process.
'With the influx of e-HR, companies are recognising that there
is no time like the present to tackle how Performance Management
is trained and managed within an organisation and are looking at
how online technologies can support them in their quest.
'We worked hard to ensure the tone and content for the programmes
were pitched at an appropriate level and have already received very
positive feedback from initial users.'
