Experiencing Epic

Florence Evans from Downlands Community School in Hassocks has spent the last week doing work experience here at Epic.

Sue Price, Head of Year for Downlands School believes that placements offer a real insight into working life. Being in an office environment gives pupils the chance to experience how the day to day running of a business works, and an example of some of the kinds of skills required.

"Work experience enables young people to have a taste of the outside world. It provides a contrast to school life. The majority of pupils thoroughly enjoy themselves in the work environment within local companies and return to school more focused with the aim of achieving new goals."

So what did Florence think of the business world and being an Epic employee for the week?

"On my way to Epic on Monday morning I was apprehensive and nervous, but as soon as I stepped into reception I was greeted with a warm smile by Brenda who made me feel welcome at once.

Most of my time was spent in accounts where Tessa, Caroline, Richard and Gillian were very friendly and made me feel at home.

I helped out the Sales department, which gave me a great insight into the design and pitching side of Epic, Jenny in Admin (who was also very welcoming), and last but not least I helped Ericka in Marketing by taking photos of Brighton to go on this month's newsletter, which was fun and something a bit different.

I did various tasks during the week such as, writing letters, making art director folders, getting screen grabs, taking photos of employees and Brighton sights, activating security passes, and finally a significant amount of filing! Even though some of these jobs might not seem that interesting (such as filing) I supervised myself and, with the help of all the staff, found them fun!

My favourite part was going out and taking pictures of sights that signify Brighton for the Epic newsletter as it gave me a chance to be more creative and imaginative. I now have experience of working in an office environment and have improved my communication skills and problem solving skills. I would definitely consider working for a company like Epic when I am older.

The week spent at Epic has given me a great insight into all aspects of the company and office life in general.

The staff are very relaxed, warm and welcoming. I have enjoyed being here to the highest degree and would like to thank everyone for being so friendly and willing to help! Thanks"

Florence
