Breakthrough leadership transforms schools
Heads, Teachers and Industry (HTI) has published an
exploratory study by the Hay Group entitled “No Barriers,
No Boundaries – Breakthrough Leadership that Transforms Schools”.
The study investigates a small group of headteachers who achieved
breakthrough results to find the common practices that enabled them
to be successful.
The results are interesting, with six common characteristics identified:
- Crossing the line – they challenge assumptions
- Taking risks – they are willing to risk careers and reputations
for principles
- Connected thinking – they see the big ideas and make them
work
- Powerful alliances – they influence others to get things
done
- The business of learning – they have entrepreneurial financial
management skills
- Sharing leadership – they delegate and share responsibilities
Although the report finds that there are no set rules that other
heads can follow it is clear that those headteachers who achieved
impressive results, though individualistic entrepreneurial leaders,
applied these common techniques and approaches.
As Anne Evans, Chief Executive at HTI states “it is vital…that
school leaders are given the tools, space and freedom to pursue
their dreams for their schools”.
The report draws the comparison between successful leaders in schools
and those in business. HTI is dedicated to raising standards of
leadership in management in education and arranges secondments in
business and public sector organisations for educationalists that
wish to exchange best practice between the sectors. Existing and
aspiring school leaders can experience and benefit from working
within a business environment and culture and apply new skills and
approaches when they return to their schools.
