UNIAID’s ALL ABOUT U: So good he launched it
twice!
John Harris, Director of Education, Epic
It’s been a busy month for UNIAID, the charity
who commissioned Epic to develop the award-winning student finance
game All About U. UNIAID has been running a series of workshops
across the country where it has been introducing students to the
tool. With ALL ABOUT U potential students have the opportunity to
experience the financial challenges of going to university before
they get there. They get to decide what their priorities are –
saving money, having a great social, getting a good degree, punishing
their liver, or balancing all four.

On the 28th September, UNIAID launched All About U at Brighton
University where they had been running a workshop. We spoke to students
who loved the game. At first they thought it might just be informative.
Actually they found it both informative and entertaining. The Higher
Education Minister, Bill Rammell, loved it too and gave it heartfelt
praise. In fact he liked it so much, he turned up to launch it again
– this time to assembled students and dignitaries in London.
The
following week Epic team members joined UNIAID and developers Kerb
at the Annual Third Sector Excellence Awards. These awards acknowledge
excellence in charity work. UNIAID was up for Best New Media Campaign
with Student Survivor, the viral marketing game where you have to
try and keep a student alive for a week. Narrowly missing first
place, they walked away with “highly commended”, the
runner-up award.
All
About U gives users a virtual experience of one year at university.
Faced with a series of scenarios, which are fun but mirror the challenges
and decisions they will have to make at university, users will learn
to balance their time, money, academic goals and social lives. The
programme can be played individually online or be incorporated into
workshops for students, parents, carers and advisers.
