Epic show report
Consultant's corner
Steve Barden spoke at the recent WOLCE conference on the subject
of 'Developing a culture for learning' and encouraged that an epidemic
was needed to transform learning culture.
Sharing the platform with Martin Mackain-Bremner of the Defence
Academy, they were charged with addressing the questions of:
- How is organisational culture defined?
- What impact does training have on company culture?
- Creating an environment conducive to learning
- The role of management to facilitating change
Steve highlighted that, in Epic's research and experience, although
building an effective learning culture is dependent upon many factors,
one of the most important being that organisations who have 'it'
is that they create a buzz around the benefits and opportunities
learning brings to their staff. This buzz is usually developed by
a combination of demonstrated commitment at all levels of the organisation
supported by a persuasive marketing campaign - Steve suggested that
creating an epidemic of enthusiasm for learning should be the aim
of all organisations and getting infected was the first step towards
this.
For an assessment of your learning culture and how to start your
own epidemic, look out next year for our new White Paper on Developing
an e-learning culture.

for further thoughts on the conference and the exhibition.
Is your e-learning working? Want to talk
about it?
In preparation for our new research report, we would like your
help. We are keen to talk to you about two key strands of your e-learning
strategy.
- How do you go about implementing your e-learning?
How do learners find it, use it and apply it? Who is involved
in integrating, launching, supporting and evaluating it? Is your
process flexible, mature or still in its infancy?
- How infectious is your learning culture? Is
it at fever pitch or has it caught a cold? Do you use champions,
learning buddies or peer support groups and is technology part
of their toolkit? What’s the response of learners to the
launch of your latest initiative?
If you would be willing to share some thoughts through
a short, confidential telephone interview during December,
then please contact Steve Barden.
All contributions will be anonymous and participants will
be given a complimentary copy of the final report.
