JISC - “Effective
Practice with e-Learning – a good practice
guide in designing for e-learning”

The Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC)
has recently published “Effective Practice with e-Learning
– a good practice guide in designing for e-learning”.
The guide is aimed at practitioners in post-16 education (HE, FE
and adult and community learning), specifically how this group can
use e-learning effectively in enhancing the quality of teaching
and learning. The booklet differs from many publications of this
kind, as it is also accompanied by a CD.
Effective practice with e-learning, focuses not on developing and
managing an e-learning project though there is a chapter on designing
for e-learning which provides a pedagogical approach to learning
activities in “a technology rich context”. The main
focus is on “the e-learning advantage”, ten case studies
that illustrate effective practice in e-learning across the post-16
sectors.
This is where providing a CD demonstrates effective use of multimedia
– it is more than just an electronic copy of the guide –
five of the case studies are available as video case studies demonstrating
effective practice within the intended environment.
This is the strength of this guide – in giving exemplars
of good practice and championing the benefits of using e-learning
in post-16 education as well as providing guidance in how to practically
apply some of the examples used. It isn’t just for novice
e-learning users, but also shows experienced practitioners how they
can plan e-learning activities as a core element of their pedagogical
approach.
This guide, concentrating on effective practice in design complements
two recent guides published by Becta’s NLN Materials Development
Team which focus more on the process of materials development. These
are “NLN creating online learning material - a good practice
guide” and “Paving the way to excellence in e-learning”.
These documents provide comprehensive advice on how an institution
can manage the design and development of interactive learning materials
and also detail the standards used in the development of NLN materials.
These guides would give technical support and guidance to any institution
initiating an e-learning development programme.
