The World Bank on lifelong learning

Presenter: Dr Harry Anthony Patrinos, Senior Education Economist, World Bank

The World Bank is looking seriously at lifelong learning and the financing of learning across the globe, particularly in areas where education and the infrastructure to support it is limited. It has published a number of reports in this area, the latest of which is Lifelong Learning in the Global Knowledge Economy.

This presentation focused primarily on how Dr Patrinos views learning in the knowledge economy and the changes he feels need to be made in pedagogy. He emphasises that e-learning has to focus on 'learning by doing' if it is to be successful, concentrating on analysis and synthesis, and supported through collaborative learning.

His view of many programmes he had seen is that they have not used technology to its full potential. E-learning, in his view, should be challenging the role of the teacher: the teacher, in the new economy, is just one source of learning, not the sole source. He feels strongly that learners need team work, problem solving and a motivation for lifelong learning to have some chance of success.
