Pick of the Keynotes: Elliott Masie

Elliott Masie photo

Elliott Masie is a big man who likes big concepts. His opening address tackled the usual suspects; ROI, simulations, collaboration, blended learning, scattered with a few case studies.

His observations about blended learning being like 'Velcro', were good i.e. we take components and stick them together, rather than any sophisticated form of integration. Let the learner blend, he says, as that's what they do anyway.

He also made an appeal for sanity on acronyms; LMS. LCMS, CRM, HCM, ERP, ADL, IMS, AICC, SCORM. IEE. However, he then proposed a new one - LS, for 'Learning System' - as a generic term. I'm not sure this is entirely helpful. If your problem is that you have a wardrobe full of old clothes, the solution is not to cram in yet another item.

Some of Masie's contribution was good, but over all it was less than completely fulfilling. The problem was the lack of anything genuinely new. By contrast, the more interesting stuff at Techlearn was taking place behind the scenes, where discussions were going on about how people really learn - or the new blend between e-learning and knowledge management.
