Techlearn
Are you ready for the second wave?
With over half of this year's 1,700 attendees being here
for the first time, this year's Techlearn seemed to mark the
emergence of a sober, second wave in e-learning. 'Overhyped
in the short-term, underhyped in the long-term' could describe
the overall feeling of the conference.
Lots of companies have disappeared, but those who had concentrated
on business needs and execution rather than hype seemed to be doing
well.
This year's topics of interest were blended learning, collaboration,
simulations, customer e-learning, the case studies and the
growing recognition that e-learning and knowledge management
are not distant cousins, but twins.
Pick of the Keynotes
The keynotes this year were a little disappointing, especially
those from Elliott's 'inner circle' - familiar faces such as Beth
Thomas and Wayne Hodgins, who seem to give the same speeches year
after year. However, interesting lessons could be gleaned from Elliott
Masie himself, and the new speakers Peter
Senge, Steve Kerr and Dave
Hopla.

Techlearn case studies in retail
Of particular interest at Techlearn this year was a group
of cases studies in the retail sector. There was a specific
emphasis on the issue of 'training in retail' at the conference
with major presentations from a range of large retailers including
McDonalds, Home Depot, JC Penney and others. These case studies
were instructive as they brought out the main challenges facing
retailers and how many are planning to respond.
