Epic Think Tank
Corporate universities
Background
One apparently compelling argument in favour of the corporate university
model is that there are an awful lot of them around, particularly
in the US. A quick search on Google throws up a wealth of examples:
- Amoco Management Learning Center
- B1U (Bank One)
- Daimler Chrysler University
- Dell University
- Disney University
- GE Management Development Institute
- Hamburger University
- Microsoft University
- NCR University
- Reebok Centre for Training & Development
- Xerox Document University
|
- SAP University
- Sears University
- Shell Open University
- Sun U
- University for People (SW Airlines)
- Tennessee Valley Authority University
- Thomson University
- Texas Instruments Learning Institute
- Walton Institute (Wal-Mart)

However, following the crowd is never a one hundred per cent reliable
strategy. Those contemplating such a development will have to decide
to what extent the creation of a corporate university is a branding
or an organisational exercise. Part of doing this will involve deciding
whether it is for specialists/leaders/graduates (e.g. Shell, Daimler
Chrysler) or for everyone within the organisation (e.g. NCR, Barclays,
Lloyds TSB).
In the end, the important question is: what kind of difference
do you expect it will make?
