Coaching and mentoring in e-learning

London, May 2003
Report by Mark Harrison, Head of Consulting, Epic Group plc
What's happening in learner support?
Everybody's talking about this subject nowadays, but what are people
actually doing? This event, organised by the E-learning Network,
provided a chance to get tutoring and e-tutoring practitioners in
front of an audience of interested e-learning practitioners and
find out.
The speakers were:
- Clare Howard - an e-coach and a traditional (face-to-face)
executive coach who has worked for organisations such as ntl,
Lloyds TSB and ICL
- Alan Sweeney - who manages online tutor support programmes
- Zulfi Hussain - who has run a range of e-tutoring programmes
for BT with special emphasis on meeting the needs of ethnic minorities
- Mike Duckett - who specialises in face-to-face sales
performance coaching
Each presenter discussed their experiences, with Mike Duckett going
one further by illustrating the coaching process in action, through
a live demonstration with a volunteer from the audience.
What evolved was a stimulating debate for and against the motion
that coaching or tutoring entirely online was feasible; a motion
that was broadly agreed upon (although this particular audience
was inevitably somewhat biased towards technology!)
