Coaching and mentoring in e-learning

Case study 2: BT Ethnic Minority Network
Presenter: Zulfi Hussain
The BT Ethnic Minority Network has 5,000 members. In order
to provide support and role models for members (often for
people considering doing business in different parts of the
world) BT provide e-mentors. A number of people were put into
matched pairs, with the BT mentors communicating primarily
through email. In 2001 there were 16 matched pairs, now there
are 165 matched pairs spanning the whole of the world.
Examples of pairs are a German tutoring an Italian and someone
in Leeds mentoring another in Cardiff and an Italian in Rome
mentoring a Glasgow man who wants to know more about doing
business in Italy.
Critical to the success has been the matching process. It's
a little like a dating game, each mentor needs to bring relevant
experience and have the right personality to suit the client.
It was hard to get mentors. There are no extra payments so
it needs committed people who then need to be trained and
supported. Mentors say they get a lot of out of the experience
- they feel more valued as people.
The whole scheme has been very successful - it is still running
and growing.
A similar scheme wholly within BT has now been set up with
mentors usually two grades higher and out of the immediate
line management.
