How Nordea made a success of virtual teamworking
Presenter: Ari Leino, Project Manager, Nordea HRD
Nordea is a leading Finnish e-banking organisation, with
a strong distribution network throughout Scandinavia and the
Baltic region. Only 11% of their customers actually visit
the branches: the rest use other, primarily technology-based,
methods to do their banking.
The organisation faces major challenges around managing at
a distance and virtual team working. Many of its people work
in different countries to their colleagues and peers in the
same business unit. For Nordea, technology provides a network
that allows them to use resources intelligently. This includes
best practice sharing, e-learning and supporting learners
whose managers might not be accessible at a local, physical
level.
The bank has had excellent results through challenging the
need for face-to-face training. In one project it ran a virtual
learning programme where teams worked on a product investment
portfolio wholly online, creating imaginary funds and brainstorming
ideas at a distance. In fact it was felt that the virtual
element gave the project a better dynamic, also allowing the
team to concentrate primarily on their day-to-day jobs while
the project was progressing, rather than losing time through
travelling to an event.
Nordea has seen a shift in the behaviour of sales management
as a result of the success of this project. There is now more
use of virtual meetings to save travel time and alleviate
the stress which previously resulted from the need to be continually
moving between multiple sites.
