An Epic workshopDevelop an effective
blended learning programme

Course description
A blended course (centred around a practical, hands-on workshop)
that gives a step-by step methodology for designing effective blended
programmes, as well as tools to help with the decision-making process
and guidance in their use.
Why this course?
Up until now, there has been little practical help available in
the often complex decision-making processes that goes into producing
an effective blended learning solution. This course provides delegates
with a structured, road-tested methodology for defining learning
solutions that makes the most effective use of available methods,
channels and media.
Who is it for?
Training and development professionals responsible for design
and delivery of learning solutions and anyone involved in overseeing,
commissioning or designing blended learning programmes within organisations.
What will you learn?
At the end of the programme you will be able to:
- Understand the core principles of designing blended learning
solutions
- Analyse existing courses or future learning needs and assess
how more blended approaches can meet your organisation’s particular
requirements
- Identify what methods of learning delivery suit particular
subjects, types of learning and different learners
- Use appropriate criteria and tools to define effective blends
for every type of learning requirement (from management skills
to systems or process training)
- Build a business case for a particular blend, assessing the
relative cost implications of using different components/channels
and calculating the Return on Investment (using ROI tools that
you can use after the course)
Programme Breakdown
- Practical pre-workshop activities posted on a dedicated Arena
web portal
- 1 day workshop
- Post-workshop discussion, and ongoing follow-up with a question
and answer facility via the web portal
Learning Portal: All delegates are supported in
their learning through a dedicted Arena blended learning portal
Takeaways/tools: ‘The Blender’ (Epic Blended Learning
ROI Calculator)
Workshop venue: Epic head office, Brighton
Our approach
Initial pre-workshop activities will introduce
the core principles of blended learning design. We will ask all
participants to look for either an existing or future course that
could benefit from a more blended approach and bring this along
to the workshop.
The workshop will be facilitated by an experienced
blended learning practitioner from Epic. It will represent a mix
of expert input, case studies and a practical exercise (which will
run throughout the day) in which delegates will work together to
create the most effective blend for a typical training solution.
Throughout the day we will provide frequent opportunities for participants
to reflect on their own situation, and design and test a high level
blend for the course they brought to the workshop.
Workshop programme
The programme for the day is as follows:
Morning
- Case studies – blended learning in practice
- Determining the drivers for your blend
- Selecting the right components for your blend
- Defining the blend
Practical case work – working in small groups to create a blend
Own example case work – individuals work out high level blends
for their own example course
Lunch
Lunch is inclusive of the fee and provides an informal opportunity
for participants to discuss their own examples with the course tutor.
Afternoon
- Carrying out a risk analysis for your blend
- Testing your blend against the key drivers
- Calculating ROI for your blend
- Presenting a business case for your blend
Practical case work – groups assess the potential ROI of the blends
that they designed earlier in the day
Own example case work – individuals assess the ROI for their own
high level blend
After the workshop the Epic facilitator will
be available online via the Arena portal to answer
questions and provide some initial e-coaching. Participants can
work further on their own example blends and send in the results
of their work for feedback from the facilitator. The discussion
forums on the Arena portal will be open to everyone who attends
the workshops and will provide ongoing opportunities for sharing
knowledge and seeking advice from fellow participants.
