Epic to present at Handheld Learning 2009 conference, Oct 5th-7th, LondonPolaroid Image Frame

Epic's Director of Learning, Dr Naomi Norman, will be presenting at Handheld Learning 2009, the world's leading event for learning using mobile and inexpensive access technologies.

Naomi's presentation, 'Be the best - mobile learning and the Army', looks at the development of games based learning using mobile technologies. Epic has produced two very different solutions for the Army on the Nintendo DS platform. One addresses Entry Level 3 Numeracy basic skills for new recruits, whilst the other explores vehicle maintenance training for the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME).

In what promises to be a fascinating presentation, Naomi will explore the principles behind these two solutions. In particular:

  • The use of visual representations and language to instigate understanding through games and other learning approaches on the Nintendo DS
  • The virtuous cycle of learning created through motivation and engagement and the drive to practise in order to improve one's performance
  • Research that analyses the effectiveness of these solutions in the field
  • How, despite the appeal of competitive game-play, Nintendo DS can actually breed collaboration between participants

Naomi will end with a look into the future - how handheld technologies that incorporate Web 2.0 tools and GPS can offer even more for Army training, and how the Nintendo DS can be utilised across the education, health and business sectors.
