Epic sponsors RAF in Race across America
In June 2010, Epic is sponsoring ‘Team RAF Survitec Epic’ in their Race Across America (RAAM). Established in 1982, RAAM is one of cycling’s longest running and toughest annual endurance events. Recognised and respected amongst sporting peers worldwide, the race covers a staggering distance of 3,010 miles from Oceanside, California to Annapolis, Maryland, all in less than 9 days. To put it in perspective, that’s around 800 miles longer than the Tour de France, completed in less than half the time!
Ed Nockles, Epic’s Web Producer, will be joining the 9-man support crew. He will dedicate his time and energy to help organise, motivate and discipline the 4-man riding team - Squadron Leader John Crewe, Flight Lieutenant Peter McCrory, Mr Steve Duffy and Flight Sergeant Matt Stephenson. The support crew are key to the success of the team, whether it’s cooking, driving, navigating, fixing bikes or communicating with the riders and race officials. The team is raising awareness and funds for Help for Heroes, whilst Ed is also raising money for Street Child Africa.
The race will require continuous cycling day and night, meaning that the riders will need to complete 125 miles each at over 20mph per day/night. Ed’s job is to make sure it all goes to plan. He comments: “I’m really looking forward to the physical and mental challenges ahead. Supporting four RAF cyclists competing in one of the world's toughest races will give me a great sense of achievement. Not only will I ensure the safety and competitive edge of the riders, I’ll also see America from an entirely different perspective.”
Epic’s Chief Executive, Jonathan Satchell, comments: “This is a fantastic opportunity for Epic to be involved in and we really look forward to tracking the team’s progress via Ed. We wish him and the team every success in the race and, of course, in raising much needed cash for charity.”
